BBA students resent KU’s move to scrap provisional admission in MBA programme

SRINAGAR: Scores of BBA students affiliated with the University of Kashmir have resented the varsity administration’s move to scrap provisional admissions in the MBA programme this year despite the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, which has delayed the terminal undergraduate semester examination.
The students from the 2017 batch pursuing the BBA programme at different government as well as private colleges affiliated with KU including Gandhi Memorial College, SSM College, SM Iqbal College and Greenland told Kashmir Reader that the varsity had issued the admission notification for the MBA programme wherein provisional admissions had been done away with.
The aggrieved students, who said they had already appeared in the mandatory C-MAT examination, which makes them eligible for MBA programme in January, said that the varsity carries out provisional admissions in the programme every year and termed ironic the administration’s decision to do away with provisional admission this year when there were all the more reasons for it given the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
They questioned the varsity administration’s move to “rush through” MBA admissions at a time when the pandemic has brought the academic activities on the campus to a halt even as there is an uncertainty over conducting a PG entrance test in rest of the programmes.
The aggrieved students also raised questions over the administration asking the aspirants to complete the admission formalities in the MBA programme within a period of only nine days from July 9-18 as pr the admission notification issued in this regard.
“I cannot understand why the university is in such a rush to wind up the admissions. At a time when they should give us more time due to the pandemic, they are depriving us of a chance at admission instead,” a student complained.
The aggrieved students feared that the university’s “undue rush” in the admission process would waste their whole academic year and they did not even have the choice to try in other postgraduate programmes.
They asked the varsity administration to allow them to apply for the MBA programme on provisional basis as it was most likely that the UGC will allow universities to declare the results of their 6th semester examination on internal assessment, which would not take much time.
The students said that the Jammu University had offered provisional admissions to the outgoing BBA students and questioned why KU cannot follow suit.
Registrar KU, Prof Nisar A Mir said that they will look into the matter.
