Use of indiscriminate force, arrests creates mistrust, says Tarigami

Criticizing the ‘indiscriminate arrest of youth and damage to public property by law enforcing agencies’ in several parts of the Valley, CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami Monday said that trust cannot be built by using indiscriminate force against people and arresting the youth.

In a statement issued here, Tarigami said that reports are pouring of damages caused by the security forces to residential houses, vehicles and beating of inmates, which is ‘unwarranted and unfortunate’.

“Such acts will further erode the trust of the masses in the government and widen the gulf which would be difficult to bridge,” he said.

He said that it is quite rational and advisable to deal with the situation with extreme caution.

“While maintaining public order, the law enforcing agencies should not become a law unto themselves and resort to ‘tit for tat’ formula. The police and the para-military forces should protect the law and not break it,” he said.

The CPI (M) leader called upon the administration to stop repressive measures and indiscriminate arrests of youth forthwith.
