Er Ehtisham Khan urges reversal of ‘unjust’ fee hike by KU

SRINAGAR: Er Ehtisham Khan, a prominent social activist and Senior Vice President of ‘The Purpose’ – a non-governmental organization committed to championing student rights and welfare – has opposed the recent decision by the University of Kashmir to implement a significant hike in backlog examination fees.
‘The Purpose’, he said, has received anonymous complaints about the unilateral move, as communicated through recent notifications by the Assistant Controller of Examinations. This has ignited widespread concern and outrage among students, particularly those from socioeconomically marginalized backgrounds, he said.
Khan in a statement said, “The decision to escalate examination fees, at a time when students are already grappling with the financial fallout of the ongoing socio-economic challenges, is deeply distressing. For many students, especially those hailing from financially constrained households, this abrupt escalation represents an insurmountable barrier to accessing quality education and realizing their academic aspirations.”
At the core of our organisation’s mission is the unwavering belief in the transformative power of education as a fundamental right accessible to all, Er Ehtisham said. “Therefore, we staunchly condemn any policy that undermines this principle and perpetuates educational inequity. The decision to burden students with exorbitant examination fees not only exacerbates existing socio-economic disparities but also jeopardizes the foundational principles of fairness and inclusivity within our education system.”
In light of these grave concerns, Ehtisham Khan has called upon the University of Kashmir administration to reconsider its stance and engage in meaningful dialogue with student representatives to explore alternative solutions that prioritize affordability and accessibility.
We urge the university to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of its students by rescinding the fee hike and working collaboratively to devise sustainable strategies that uphold the rights of every student to pursue education without financial encumbrances, he said.
Khan also appealed to the government authorities, including the esteemed Principal Secretary for Higher Education, to intervene in this matter and uphold their responsibility to safeguard the interests of students.
“It is imperative that policymakers prioritize the creation of an educational environment that fosters equitable opportunities for all students, irrespective of their socio-economic background,” Ehtisham added.
Expressing solidarity with the students of the University of Kashmir, ‘The Purpose’ said it reaffirms its dedication to advocating for a more just and inclusive educational landscape. “Together, we stand united in our pursuit of a future where every student can thrive academically, unimpeded by financial barriers or systemic injustices,” it said.
