By cultivating passion and joy in learning, educators can turn education from a chore into a lifelong pursuit
By Syed Mustafa Ahmad
Teaching is perhaps the most challenging profession in the world. Exactly how difficult it is will be discussed later in this article. For now, it is worth reflecting on different professions, while keeping teaching at the very top. Livelihood is the foundation of human life. Without it, existence loses meaning. From the farmer to the sweeper, every profession plays a valuable role in the complex structure of our society. The teacher, too, has a central role—not merely in earning bread and butter, but in shaping lives. Teaching is not just about solving questions or memorising dates at high speed. It is not about tricks for securing full marks. It is something deeper and far more meaningful.
The aim of teaching, in its truest form, is to keep students continuously engaged with their studies—in the classroom and beyond.
Being a private tutor, I hesitate to call myself a full-fledged teacher. Rather, I consider myself a learner. While teaching, I often find that my students’ motivation and energy rise for a moment but quickly dwindle. My influence seems like a spark that vanishes without leaving a flame. Though they appear attentive in class, I struggle to keep them engaged in a stable and long-lasting way. It feels as if my words are written on water—seen for an instant, then gone.
This led me to reflect deeply on my shortcomings. I realised that I was failing to connect their studies with their practical lives. I was unable to transform education into passion. Though my words carried meaning, they were knocking on the wrong door. Instead of guiding them to push the right way forward, I taught them to pull endlessly at a locked one, leaving them exhausted for no result. I was skinning a dead horse. This realisation pushed me to search for new methods of making education a passionate, joyful experience.
Keeping students hooked on their studies has lasting benefits. First, it makes education enjoyable. When knowledge becomes a source of fun and discovery, students pursue it willingly, embracing challenges rather than avoiding them. Second, it elevates the status of learning itself. When students deeply value knowledge, education becomes a radiant light, inspiring others and uplifting society. Third, it secures a brighter future. A generation engaged in meaningful and vibrant learning develops strong foundations for progress in every walk of life. Such an atmosphere fills the world with fragrance, as if wisdom itself perfumes the air.
Our collective task is to keep students drawn toward their studies in every possible way. This may seem difficult in an age of constant distractions, but with efficiency, guidance, and expert suggestions, it becomes achievable. The path will always have thorns and hurdles, but keeping our vision high and spirits open will allow us to overcome challenges and uplift the morale of students. Let us pledge to make education the foremost priority—engaging students in pursuits that are meaningful, rewarding, and stress-free. The test of time will surely audit our efforts, but until then, we must keep striving with hope and conviction.
