Many argue that contemporary doctoral programmes have become excessively focused on producing highly specialised experts rather than nurturing broad-minded thinkers capable of addressing the complex challenges of the modern world. This debate has gained significance as societies confront unprecedented social, economic, environmental, and technological transformations that demand innovative and interdisciplinary solutions.

The central purpose of doctoral education should extend beyond the production of specialised knowledge. While expertise remains an essential component of scholarly work, the broader mission of universities should involve cultivating individuals who possess intellectual curiosity, critical thinking abilities, ethical awareness, creativity, and a commitment to social responsibility. The distinction between a specialist and a thinker is important.
