The Illusion Of Freedom: Breaking Free From Ego And Desires

Must read

True liberty lies not in following every whim, but in recognising the power of self-control, humility, and adherence to higher values

In today’s world, when you try to guide someone with sincerity and genuine concern, especially when you see them heading towards a path of harm or misguidance, the most common response you hear is this: It is my life and my choice. Who are you to tell me what to do?

This one sentence reflects how deeply we have shifted from truth to ego. It shows how arrogance has taken the place of humility, how stubbornness has replaced wisdom, and how truth is now treated like an insult. People no longer feel ashamed of their wrongdoings. Instead, they proudly display their flaws as if they were achievements. Sincere advice is no longer welcomed. It is dismissed. Those who try to guide others with love are called judgmental and controlling.

Today, the slogan ‘My Body My Choice’ is not just a personal opinion. It has become a loud and proud declaration of self-worship. The problem is not in having choices. The problem is in thinking that every choice is automatically right just because it is ours. People believe that freedom means doing whatever the heart desires without thinking about consequences. Even if the path leads to destruction or shame or the slow death of one’s self-worth, it is still labelled as freedom. But that is not freedom. That is slavery. Slavery to one’s own desires. Slavery to the ego. Slavery to the very things that take away inner peace.

We must stop and think. Not every desire is valid. Not every feeling is meant to be followed. Some desires look beautiful from the outside, but they hollow us from within. Some choices feel powerful at first but leave deep regrets later. Just because you can do something does not always mean you should. Real freedom is not about living without limits. It is about knowing where to draw the line. Real strength is not in following every feeling. It is in controlling the self when it matters most.

The Quran opens our eyes to this very truth. It says clearly and powerfully: Have you seen the one who takes his own desires as his god? What a deep and frightening question. When we blindly follow every whim and wish, when our feelings become our highest authority, we are not free. We are trapped. We are worshipping our desires. We are giving up our purpose just to feel temporary satisfaction.

This issue is no longer personal. It has become a mindset. A mindset that celebrates rebellion and mocks decency. A culture that laughs at modesty and glorifies vulgarity. A generation that sees advice as insult and sees shamelessness as strength. In such a world, truth no longer screams. It whispers. And very few are willing to listen to its voice anymore.

Those who turn away from truth often believe they are being bold or modern or liberated. But the truth is something else. They are not escaping society or religion. They are escaping themselves. They are running from their conscience. That small voice inside that still whispers late at night, telling them they are made for something better. That they are more than just flesh and wants. That they are souls.

We live in a time where bodies are uncovered but hearts are locked. Where freedom is shouted but peace is missing. Maybe the answer is not in chasing more freedom. Maybe it is in understanding what real freedom even means. Because true freedom is not doing what you feel like. It is doing what is right even when you do not feel like it.

So I ask you sincerely. Think for a moment. Look within yourself. Is your night really dark? Or have you simply closed your eyes?

Conclusion

In the end, the true measure of a life is not how loudly we defend our rights but how wisely we live our responsibilities. Real freedom is not the ability to follow every desire. It is the ability to rise above them. Desires fade. Feelings change. But the consequences of our choices remain. When we confuse rebellion with independence and weakness with freedom, we lose what it means to be truly human.

Let us not be slaves to our impulses. Let us not silence truth just because it makes us uncomfortable. Real peace begins the day we stop blaming everything outside and start reflecting inside. That is when we realise that freedom without values is just a polished form of destruction. That is when we understand that peace comes not from doing everything we want but from doing what is right.

So ask yourself one last question. Are you truly free? Or have you just given your chains a beautiful name?

Because sometimes the heaviest prison is the one we build with our own hands and still call it freedom.
