Bengaluru breaks 133-yr-old record for highest daily rainfall in June

BENGALURU: The very first spell of rain during the Southwest Monsoon in Bengaluru on Sunday broke the 133-year-old record for the highest daily rainfall in June.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru city received 111.1 mm of rainfall on Sunday.
The previous highest was 101.6 mm recorded on June 16, 1891. The average rainfall in Bengaluru for June is 106.5 mm.
IMD has said rainfall is expected to continue in Bengaluru for the next two days with overcast conditions, followed by light to moderate thundershowers.
The heavy downpour, along with forecasts of more rainfall in the coming days, has put the city on course to break its highest monthly rainfall for June. The current record is 228.2 mm recorded in 1996.

Thundershowers coupled with gusty winds resulted in inundation and damages in several parts of Bengaluru.
According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), it received 285 complaints on Sunday, the majority of which were related to trees or branches falling on roads and vehicles.
BBMP said it received 206 tree fall complaints and 41 complaints of branches falling. The remaining 38 complaints were related to inundation and water stagnation.
The BBMP Forest Wing received 118 complaints of tree fall of which 40 trees fell in the South Zone, mainly near Jayanagar. It also received 128 complaints of branches falling on Sunday.
