AAC expresses concern over Mirwaiz’s house detention ahead of ‘Shaheed-e-Millat’ anniversary

SRINAGAR: The Awami Action Committee (AAC) issued a statement expressing concern over the house detention of its chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, as the martyrdom anniversary of its founding chairman, Shaheed-e-Millat Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq, approaches on May 21st.
“Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been placed under house detention since May 3rd and has been restricted from leaving his residence. This has prevented him from delivering the Friday sermon and offering prayers at Jama Masjid, as well as participating in any social or religious events,” the statement said, adding. “Visitors, including media personnel, are prohibited from meeting him. Despite ongoing legal proceedings where state authorities claim him to be a “free man,” he continues to be subjected to detention.”
The AAC highlighted the tradition of organizing week-long commemorative functions called “Hafta-e-Shahadat” before 2019 to honor its leader and the martyrs of Hawal. However, it is unlikely that commemorative functions involving public participation will be permitted by the authorities, it said.
The AAC emphasized that the memory of the martyred leader lives on in the hearts of the Kashmiri people, and their love and respect for him have only deepened over time. They urged people to honor his legacy by adhering to the principles he stood for as both the Mirwaiz and a selfless political leader, which encompass following the path outlined in the Quran and Sunnah in all aspects of life.
Subject to approval by the authorities, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid plans to organize Majlis-e-Quran Khwani and Muqabla Husne Qirat at Jama Masjid on May 17th, inviting people to participate and pray for the forgiveness and paradise of their beloved leader and all the martyrs. On May 18th, Anjuman Nusratul Islam will host an educational seminar titled “Our Society Our Responsibilities” at the central hall of Islamia School Srinagar, with students from different schools expected to participate.
“On May 21st, people are encouraged to visit Eid Gah and offer Fatiha to their beloved leader, Shaheed-e-Millat, Shaheed-e-Hurriyat, the Hawal Martyrs, and all the martyrs, if permitted by the authorities. A commemorative gathering will be held there if Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is allowed to visit his father’s grave,” the AAC said.
