Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, nestled in the Pir Panjal range of the western Himalayas. Its remarkable scenery includes dense forests, verdant meadows, and snow-capped peaks.
The establishment of the Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary was intended to preserve the habitat of the world’s largest wild goat, the Markhor, and its associated catchment area. Moreover, the sanctuary provides possibilities for trekking and adventure enthusiasts. The captivating landscapes and unspoiled natural environment make it an appealing destination for those interested in outdoor activities.
Zaznar can be found within the confines of the Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary, situated approximately 23 kilometres from Hirpora Village. Known for its diverse ecosystem, the sanctuary considers Zaznar as its focal point. Notably, the renowned wild goat, Capra falconeri, finds its unique home in this wildlife sanctuary, leading to Zaznar being recognized as a critical markhor habitat by the Wildlife Trust of India.
Diligent efforts for the protection and preservation of this area are underway through the collaborative endeavours of the Wildlife Protection Department of J&K and the Wildlife Trust of India. Zaznar stands out as an exceptional destination for tourists, adorned with seasonal inhabitants from the Chenab Valley.
Exploring the rich history and intriguing origins of Zaznar
Zaznar originates from the combination of two words, ‘Zaz’ and ‘Nar,’ signifying a ‘red place,’ reminiscent of the captivating hues observed during sunset, thus earning the name Zaznar. The sunset and the Nard landscape’s presence bear testimony to the nomenclature of this locale. According to the accounts shared by the community elders, Zaznar was a favoured destination for Mughal emperors who delighted in its scenic beauty.
Drawing upon the historical insights provided by the temporary residents of Zaznar, it was revealed that this locale gained fame for the abundant sightings of Markhor, with numerous of these majestic creatures gracing the area. Simultaneously, they noted that disruptions in the sanctuary caused by the construction of the Mughal Road prompted Markhors to relocate to the elevated regions of the sanctuary.
This location is renowned for its picturesque scenery, making it a sought-after destination for tourists with valid reasons. Upon arrival, we indulge in the beauty of the Mughal Road, the Hastwanj Mountains’ scenic views, and the captivating landscapes of Minimarg and Renuire. The surroundings feature pristine water ponds, and hidden gems within the towering mountains. While forests naturally contribute to the allure of nature, junipers uniquely embellish this place, enhancing its attractiveness. Visitors are drawn to this site by its diverse and abundant flora and fauna.
Exploring the rich cultural tapestry
Communities enhance the beauty of the area, primarily consisting of seasonal residents from the Chenab Valley who possess a distinctive way of life. Upon our arrival, they warmly greeted our crew. Following discussions with some community members, they shared insights into their cultural and traditional practices. The people were amicable, with many engaged in herding professionally and selling sheep and goats for their livelihood. This location is enveloped by the Bakarwal Community.
Preserving Pristine Beauty: Unveiling an Eco-Tourism Haven Free from Pollution, Pioneered by the Wildlife Trust of India
This location ought to be categorized as part of eco-tourism. Additionally, it remains devoid of pollution and polythene.
The Wildlife Trust of India distributes gas stoves to the local community through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana (PMUY) to safeguard the juniper (Juniper Communis). This endeavour contributes to the protection of the juniper and addresses other potential fire hazards within the sanctuary.
