SKUAST forestry faculty holds plantation drive at its campus in Ganderbal

‘Developing green cover on southern campus slope, model for replication in entire region’

SRINAGAR: A mega plantation drive was organized by the Faculty of Forestry, Benhama-Watlar, Ganderbal , SKUAST-K in collaboration with Forest Department, Jammu and Kashmir Government and Rahim Greens, with this year theme “Forests and sustainable Production and consumption”
The Chief guest on the occasion was Sanjeev Verma (IAS), Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Ecology and Environment, Govt. of J & K. The Guest of the honour was Prof.(Dr.) N.A.Ganai, Vice Chancellor , SKUAST-K, Dr. Mohit Gera (IFS), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, Govt. of J & K and Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)- Central Research Institute for Jute and allied Fibres Kolkata.
The Program started with the welcome address by Dean, Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Sajad A Gangoo, who highlighted the importance of Forest Education in the country and the role played by the Faculty from its inception.
Sanjeev Verma planted some saplings of Chinar on the occasion. He appreciated the efforts of the Faculty of Forestry for organizing such events. He told the students to identify the spots wherever they need to carry on the research part. Forest department will be happy to assist them in their research work.
On the occasion after planting few saplings, Dr Gouranga Kar said that Jute institute will be happy to have collaboration with the skuast-k for working in some areas of fibers. He told the students to work hard in their subject and take the help of IT tools to carry out the further research. He said that Plastic has created havoc and needs to be replaced by the natural fibers.
Dr Mohit Gera on the occasion said that I am happy to be part of this event in the Faculty of Forestry. He Stressed upon the students to compete for the competitions and prove their worth . If you work hard you will definitely excel in your fields and don’t rely on reservations and concessions in the jobs. Vice chancellor , Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, on the occasion said that I am happy that this young faculty is growing day by day and now we are celebrating world forestry day and this mega Plantation drive is part of it. He appreciated the role of Rahim Greens who has taken pledge to plant one million plants in near future. He told students that knowledge is on your finger tips and you should believe in yourself. He thanked Dr Mohit Gera for his inspirational speech and thanked him for clearing the projects submitted by our scientists.. The challenge of greening of this southern slope will be model to be used in the entire region.
The Mega Plantation Program was attended by about 600 students of Faculty of Forestry, Veterinary and Animal husbandry, Horticulture and Fisheries who have planted 5000 saplings of pinus and broadleaved species . Deans and Associate Deans of all the Faculties participated in the program. Director Education, Prof. M.N. Khan, Prof Dil M Makhdoomi, director extension, Prof Tariq H Masoodi, Registrar also participated in the Program.
