Reshipora villagers demand portable water, stage protest against Jal Shakti

Awantipora: Residents of Reshipora village in Awantipora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Tuesday protested against shortage of potable water.
Eyewitness told Kashmir Reader that large number of people mostly women of Reshipora village of Awantipora took into the streets Tuesday morning and staged protest against the Jal Shakti department
The protesters appealed to higher officials of the Jal Shakti department and district administration to solve their problem as soon as possible.
The residents said that they were without water for the past two months and are being made to suffer by the Jal Shakti department.
Mohammad Shafi, a local resident said that they were receiving drinking water from Renzipora tanky but for the last two months they are without drinking water.
” We don’t receive water from Renzipora due to which our women are suffering,” he said, adding that they can’t use water from Jhelum because it is highly polluted.
“The groundwater too can’t be used due to high iron content,” he said, adding that they have been moving from pillar to post for the past two years pleading before authorities of the Jal Shakti department for seeking a redressal but they pay only lip service.
The residents appealed to higher authorities to look into the matter and seek a solution to the issue.
An elderly woman of the village said that they have to travel 4 kilometers to fetch drinking water.
“We appeal Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Baseer-Ul-Haq Choudhary to direct the concerned officials to redress the grievances on priority as we are suffering,” she said, adding that their water woes will worsen in winter if not redressed timely.
