Drive against illegal sand mining carried out in Pampore

PAMPORE: The authorities in Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district launched a crackdown on illegal sand mining from Jhelum and destroyed the illegal ramps made along the river to move trucks and other heavy machinery.
Official told Kashmir Reader that joint raids were carried out by officials of Revenue department Pampore and Geology and mining department after they received several complaints from local residents about illegal extraction of sand in these areas.
The raids were conducted in Pampore and Kakapora areas including Patalbagh, Bujibagh , Samboora, Hatiwara areas of Pampore and Kakapora area.
“Scores of ramps were destroyed by the joint team which were used by sand diggers for illegal sand extraction,” officials told Kashmir Reader.
The local residents said that scores of sand diggers mine sand from Jhelum in Kakapora, Sambora, Patalbagh and Bujbagh using their boats.
The sand, they said, is loaded by JCB machines on tippers which carry it to various sites.
The residents said that the JCBs and tippers damage river banks.
