Satish Sharma meets Union Railway Minister; pitches for revival of Jammu–Rajouri–Poonch Rail connectivity project

Must read

NEW DELHI: Minister Satish Sharma met Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday to advocate for the long-pending rail connectivity project to border districts Rajouri and Poonch. Sharma emphasized the strategic, economic, and social importance of the proposed Jammu–Akhnoor–Dori Dager–Sunderbani–Nowshera–Rajouri–Poonch rail corridor, urging the Railway Ministry to prioritize its early execution.
He highlighted that a survey for the rail alignment had been conducted previously and called for its revival. Despite their significance, Rajouri and Poonch remain among the few major regions in India without rail connectivity. Sharma pointed out that adverse weather, difficult terrain, and road disruptions frequently hamper movement of people, essential commodities, and emergency services in these districts. Rail connectivity, he argued, would provide reliable, all-weather transportation, boost economic activities, and improve residents’ quality of life.
The Minister underscored the national security aspect, noting that Rajouri and Poonch share sensitive international borders and play a crucial role in safeguarding national interests. A rail corridor would enhance logistical capabilities and facilitate faster personnel and resource movement, strengthening both civilian connectivity and strategic security.
He also stressed that the project could unlock new opportunities for tourism, trade, industry, and employment, integrating these border districts more closely with the national economy. Sharma urged the Railway Ministry to commission a fresh feasibility study based on the earlier survey and allocate necessary funds, with the Jammu and Kashmir government ready to cooperate fully in land acquisition, clearances, and administrative processes.
Reiterating that rail connectivity is a developmental necessity, Sharma expressed hope that the project would soon move toward implementation, benefitting the region’s strategic and socio-economic growth.
In addition to rail infrastructure, Sharma raised concerns about Jammu and Kashmir’s digital sector. He called for enhanced support to accelerate digital transformation, including establishing IT parks, incubation centers, and digital skill hubs. Emphasizing the potential of the young workforce, he urged greater collaboration in areas like AI, cybersecurity, e-governance, and startup development. Sharma also sought support to expand digital infrastructure in remote and border areas to improve connectivity, governance, healthcare, and education, especially in underserved regions.
