Education has always been considered the foundation of a civilised society. It shapes minds, builds character, and prepares future generations to contribute positively to their communities. In Kashmir, education once carried a deep cultural and moral value. Teachers were respected like guardians, schools were viewed as centres of discipline and learning, and parents considered education the strongest path toward dignity and success. However, over the past few years, serious concerns have emerged regarding the declining quality of education in the region. The growing obsession with grades, rising indiscipline among students, lack of commitment from some teachers, and weakening family involvement have together created a crisis that is affecting society at every level.
The Obsession With Grades
The most visible change in modern education is the rise of the grade system. Today, academic success is often measured only through marks, percentages, and ranks. Students are constantly under pressure to score high grades because society has created the belief that marks define intelligence and future success. While evaluation is necessary, the excessive focus on grades has slowly destroyed the true purpose of education. Learning has become mechanical. Instead of understanding concepts, students memorise answers simply to pass examinations. Creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking are being replaced by rote learning.
Emotional Pressure On Students
This unhealthy competition has also created emotional pressure among students. Many young people suffer from stress, anxiety, and fear of failure because they are expected to achieve unrealistic academic results. Parents compare children with others, schools celebrate toppers more than learners, and social status is often linked with marks. As a result, students begin to feel worthless if they fail to secure high grades. Education, instead of becoming a source of enlightenment, turns into a burden.
Grades Without Knowledge
The problem becomes more serious when grades are achieved without genuine learning. In many institutions, students manage to score good marks despite lacking practical skills, communication abilities, or analytical thinking. This creates a dangerous gap between education and real-life capability. Degrees increase, but knowledge decreases. Society then produces graduates who struggle to solve problems, communicate effectively, or compete in professional environments.
Rising Indiscipline Among Students
Another alarming issue is the growing indiscipline among students. Discipline is essential for a healthy educational environment because it teaches responsibility, respect, and self-control. Unfortunately, many schools and colleges are now witnessing increasing levels of disrespectful behaviour, absenteeism, classroom disruption, and addiction to digital distractions. Mobile phones and social media have become major causes of reduced concentration among students. Instead of focusing on studies, many young people spend hours on entertainment platforms that consume their attention and weaken their academic performance.
Peer Pressure And Digital Distractions
Peer pressure has also contributed to the decline in discipline. Some students engage in unhealthy competition, aggressive behaviour, or harmful habits simply to fit into social groups. In certain cases, the influence of violence, drug abuse, and negative online content affects young minds and changes their attitudes toward education. When discipline weakens, the classroom loses its seriousness, and learning becomes difficult for both students and teachers.
The Role Of Teachers
However, students alone cannot be blamed for the current crisis. Teachers, who are considered the backbone of the education system, also share responsibility. A teacher is not merely an employee who completes lessons and receives a salary. A true teacher inspires students, builds character, and guides young minds toward wisdom and morality. Sadly, the dedication once associated with the teaching profession appears to be declining in some places.
Loss Of Passion And Respect
There are institutions where teachers arrive late, remain unprepared, or fail to engage students effectively. Some educators focus only on completing the syllabus rather than ensuring real understanding. Others have become overly dependent on outdated teaching methods that no longer inspire students in the modern age. When teachers lose passion for teaching, students also lose motivation to learn. The respect between students and teachers has also weakened over time. In earlier generations, teachers held a position of great honour in society. Today, conflicts between students and educators have become more common. This decline in mutual respect damages the educational atmosphere and reduces the moral authority of schools. A society that fails to respect its teachers ultimately weakens its own future.
Weakening Family Involvement
Family involvement is another important factor in the educational decline. Parents and relatives play a major role in shaping a child’s personality and attitude toward learning. Unfortunately, many families today are either too busy or too disconnected from the educational lives of their children. Some parents focus only on marks while ignoring emotional support, discipline, and moral guidance. Others place excessive pressure on children without understanding their individual abilities and interests.
Impact Of Technology On Family Bonds
In many households, communication between parents and children has weakened because of technology and changing lifestyles. Young people spend more time online than interacting with family members. As a result, children often lack proper guidance and emotional stability. Without strong family support, students become more vulnerable to stress, distraction, and negative influences.
Social and Political Challenges
The situation in Kashmir is further complicated by social and political challenges that have affected education for decades. Frequent disruptions, uncertainty, and interruptions in academic schedules have deeply impacted students’ learning processes. Many students face difficulties completing courses regularly, while institutions struggle to maintain consistency in educational activities. This instability affects both academic quality and student motivation.
Infrastructure Gaps
Infrastructure problems also continue to affect several educational institutions in Kashmir. Many schools lack modern laboratories, libraries, digital resources, and proper classroom facilities. In rural areas, some students still face difficulties accessing quality education due to poor transportation, limited internet connectivity, or a shortage of trained staff. These inequalities create a divide between students who have access to resources and those who do not.
Unemployment Among Educated Youth
One of the most painful consequences of the declining education system is unemployment among educated youth. Every year, thousands of students complete degrees with hopes of building successful careers. However, many struggle to find meaningful employment because their education has not prepared them with the practical skills required in modern workplaces. This creates frustration, hopelessness, and loss of confidence among young people.
Social Consequences Of Unemployment
Unemployment not only affects individuals but also damages society as a whole. A frustrated youth population becomes more vulnerable to social problems such as depression, drug addiction, violence, and criminal activity. When educated individuals feel disconnected from opportunities, they may begin to lose trust in institutions and society itself.
Decline Of Moral Values
The decline in moral values is another serious outcome of the weakening education system. Education should not only teach mathematics, science, or language; it should also develop honesty, compassion, discipline, and social responsibility. Unfortunately, moral education has become secondary in many institutions. Success is increasingly measured through material achievements rather than character and ethics.
A Society Without Ethics
As moral values weaken, society experiences growing intolerance, dishonesty, selfishness, and a lack of empathy. Corruption, cheating, disrespect, and social division often emerge when education fails to build ethical awareness. A society may produce highly qualified individuals, but without moral values, knowledge can become harmful rather than beneficial.
Brain Drain From Kashmir
Another major issue is the increasing “brain drain” from Kashmir. Many talented students leave the region in search of better educational and professional opportunities outside. While seeking growth is natural, the continuous migration of skilled youth creates a loss of intellectual and creative potential within society. Kashmir risks losing some of its brightest minds because local systems fail to provide sufficient opportunities and confidence for the future.
Hope For Change
Despite these challenges, hope still exists. The decline of education is not irreversible. Positive change can occur if students, parents, teachers, educational authorities, and society work together sincerely. Reforms must begin with changing the mindset that grades alone define success. Schools should encourage creativity, practical learning, critical thinking, and emotional well-being rather than promoting unhealthy competition.
What Teachers Must Do
Teachers must receive proper training, motivation, and support so they can adapt to modern educational needs. The teaching profession should once again become a respected mission rather than merely a source of income. Students should be encouraged to participate in debates, arts, sports, science projects, and community activities that develop confidence and leadership skills.
What Parents Must Do
Parents also need to become active partners in education. Instead of pressuring children only for marks, families should provide emotional support, moral guidance, and balanced expectations. Communication between parents and children must improve so that young people feel understood and motivated.
Skill-Based Learning And Career Guidance
Educational institutions in Kashmir should also focus on career counselling and skill-based learning. Students need guidance about modern career opportunities, entrepreneurship, technology, and vocational skills. Practical education can help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and employment opportunities.
The True Purpose Of Education
Most importantly, society must recognise that education is not only about producing workers or degree holders. The true purpose of education is to create responsible human beings who can think independently, contribute positively, and uphold moral values. Without discipline, ethics, and genuine learning, no society can progress sustainably.
Reviving Kashmir’s Intellectual Legacy
Kashmir has a rich intellectual and cultural history. The region has produced scholars, poets, teachers, and thinkers who contributed greatly to society. Reviving the spirit of quality education is essential for protecting this legacy and building a better future for coming generations.
A Wake-Up Call
The crisis facing education today should serve as a wake-up call. If ignored, its consequences may continue to damage social harmony, youth development, and public trust. But if addressed wisely and collectively, education can once again become a source of hope, progress, and transformation in Kashmir.
The future of society depends not only on how many students pass examinations, but on how many become responsible, skilled, disciplined, and morally aware citizens. That is the true measure of a successful education system.
