Firdous Ahmad Khanday

Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat is an iconic figure from Jammu and Kashmir, known for his significant contributions toward the well-being of both flora and fauna. He often raises issues related to the potential threats and risks associated with unsustainable construction and over-excavation. Furthermore, he is the lone warrior who wars for society against discrimination, injustice, and most importantly, against the rising environmental challenges that could disturb the whole biodiversity

Dr Bhat’s research on any issue is always grounded in thorough analysis and practical experience. His contributions to preserving the environment from potential damage are a testament to a living legend. His analytical ability showcases the true spirit of dedication and obsession towards environmental protection. So far, he has discussed and published various articles related to socio-environmental issues, and there isn’t a single write-up of his that I haven’t read. His works have truly inspired me a lot.

His visit to the Warwan Valley this year was pivotal in promoting the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the local people through various platforms such as print and social media. He not only captured the true essence of our traditions and heritage but also made them accessible to those who have a deep interest in exploring new places.

The content he showcased through his camera and writings attracted a large number of visitors to the valley, drawing significant attention from people across different regions. In his write-ups, he also urged the concerned authorities to fulfil the basic requirements of the area. Additionally, he made the public aware of various government schemes meant for rural communities, many of which were previously unknown to us. Furthermore, he discussed developmental works, emphasised sustainable tourism, and inspired local people to become more aware and involved.

As a tourism student, I have a deep inclination towards the environment, and obviously, the tourism industry is wholly and solely dependent on a sustainable environment.

As long as we do not disturb the biodiversity, tourism will continue to flourish and ensure its long-term survival. However, it is totally unbearable to witness the increasing destruction of the ecosystem by our own actions. If this continues, it will indeed turn into adversity for all of us. I am confident that one day, the great efforts of Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat will bring about positive and lasting changes, as his works are already being recognised and considered for the betterment and well-being of both the environment and society

The writer holds a Master’s in Tourism and Travel Management, the University of Kashmir
