Earthquake Engineering to Genetic Plant Breeding: Emerging PG courses in central universities

MTech in Earthquake Engineering
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is offering a regular four-semester course in earthquake engineering. The course comes under the Department of Civil Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The specialised programme is offered by select central universities in the country.
The course consists of theoretical and laboratory components with seminar presentations and dissertations which will allow the students to develop their skills in the field of earthquake engineering. This course offers various other topics like advanced mathematics, finite element method, seismology and geotechnical earthquake engineering, earthquake-resistant design and disaster mitigation and management among others.
To pursue the course in JMI, candidates must have graduated from a recognised university and should have cleared the entrance examination. GATE and CUSAT-CAT are some of the entrance exams that are accepted by the Institute. Other than JMI, students can pursue this course at IIT Roorkee, Dhanbad, Indian School of Mines and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology.
After completion of the course, students can get diverse job profiles like remote sensing engineer, GIS analysts, survey geologist, mineral engineer, and geoscientist among others profiles. Students can also clear an entrance exam and can get into the Indian Meteorological Department.
MArch Ekistics
Master of Architecture and Ekistics is a postgraduate degree that deals with development dynamics in expanding human settlements. The course is again offered by Jamia Millia Islamia which offers land economics, demographic profile and spatial information of settlements, resource appraisal, sustainable forest management, building typologies, and study of land and forest laws, among others. Students can refer to the official website of JMI to learn more about the course structure and syllabus.
The two-year course takes admission of just 24 students. The course offers roles like architect, landscape architect, and architectural engineer among other opportunities. Other than JMI, the course is offered by various private universities like Chandigarh College of Architecture, Sunder Deep Group of Institutions, SPA Bhopal – School of Planning and Architecture, and others.
MSc Ag in Entomology
The course is offered by Nagaland University on its Medziphema campus. The idea of the course is to develop specialised human resources in the field to provide extension work in the field of agriculture and to generate technical knowledge in the field of entomology.
Other than graduation in agriculture, interested students have to apply for the course through an entrance examination GATE, CUET PG, BISAT, IIT JAM, DUET, TISS NET and BHU PET, followed by a personal interview.
After completion of the course, the following job profiles will be appropriate for the student: agronomist, agricultural entomologist, forensic entomologist, survey entomologist, commercial entomologist, farm manager, agricultural officer, and others. Other than the central university, a candidate can also apply to some private colleges like Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Junagadh Agricultural University, Anand Agricultural University, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, etc.
MSc Coastal Disaster Management
Pondicherry University is one of the few institutions in the country that has formed a separate department on coastal disaster management along with the Tata Institute of Social Science. IIT Guwahati teaches the subject under its Centre for Disaster Management and Research. According to the website, any student with a bachelor in science, geography, BE, civil engineering, electrical, and electronics engineering with a minimum of 55 per cent of marks is eligible for admission.
“Selection of the candidates for MSc degree is based on the performance of the entrance examinations which will include 80 MCQ in the following fields at BSc level and 20 questions from English and test of reasoning.” read the website. The course will focus on disaster management, remote sensing, geographical information systems, and geophysics.
After completing the course, a student can be expected to work in the following job profiles: humanitarian aid worker, community outreach coordinator, project manager, risk analyst, emergency response coordinator, and others. Candidates can also apply to work for State Disaster Management Authorities, District Disaster Management Authorities, NGOs, United Nations organisations, etc.
MSc in Genetics and Plant Breeding
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is offering a course on MSc in genetics and plant breeding. The two-year degree course is based on credit under the guidelines of ICAR or an equivalent examination recognized by the University. The admission of a candidate in the course will be completed after the candidate satisfies all the eligibility requirements, qualifies in the PET and completes all formalities required for admission in the course.
The admission process will begin after the declaration of PET results. In the course, students will read various topics like molecular genetics, cytology, Mendelian genetics, plant breeding and biochemistry, modern methods of crop breeding, phytochemicals, transgenic plants, and others.
After completion of the course, a candidate will be expected to work as a plant breeder, plant geneticist, farm manager, agronomist, assistant professor, associate researcher, and others.
