GDC Pattan holds health screening, awareness programme

SRINAGAR: The College Health Committee and Red Cross Committee of Government degree College Pattan in collaboration with Cancer Society of Kashmir organized a one day screening-cum-awareness programme in the Browsing Centre of the college. In her inaugural address, Principal (Prof Safiya Khaleel) asserted the need and importance of such awareness programmes as this fatal disease consumes about 10 million people every year. In his in-depth speech, Dr Tariq Ahmad Khawar (Producer EMMRC,KU and member of the Cancer Society of Kashmir) discussed the role played by the CSK in spreading awareness about the control of Cancer. He also asserted about philanthropic work carried out by CSK.
This was followed by a lively presentation on the theme by Prof (Dr) Nazir Ahmad Khan, Head, Department of Pain and Palliative Care ,SKIMS, Soura. He opined that taking the masses out of cancer-phobia is the need of the hour. One needs to understand the nuances of the disease optimistically and then take precautionary measures to stay away from the disease. He advised the audience to take a balanced diet and exercise regularly. This was followed by a talk by Dr Marekha Ahmad (Medical Superintendent) wherein she discussed the role of the department of Pain and Palliative Care SKIMS in mass-counseling and easing out the pain of the affected patients. This was followed by a general health screening of students and the staff by the team of doctors from SKIMS at the college health facility centre. Among the other dignitaries, M Arif Mir, Mushtaq Ahmad Mir and Waseem Ahmad (from Cancer Society of Kashmir) were also present during the occasion.
The programme was coordinated by Prof Zahoor Ahmad Mir. A detailed report was presented by Professor Nayeem Ahmad Shah. Prof Safeer Mukhtar Bhat managed the hospitality and protocol. Prof Sajad Sarvar and Prof As Sami acted as organizing secretaries of the programme.
