Faculty of Fisheries SKUAST-K holds cleanliness drive at Nilnag Lake Yosmarg

Sensitised locals about the importance of this vital lake

Srinagar: The three divisions of Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-Kashmir, participated on Friday held a day long awareness, cleanliness drive at Nilnag Lake in Yousmarg.
Heads of the divisions of Aquatic Environmental Management, Fisheries Resource Management & Genetics & Biotechnology along with scientific staff and scholars participated in this drive.
The programme was funded by National Fisheries Development Board(NFDB), Hyderabad.
The three divisions are working on various parameters of this high altitude lake like Limnology, trophic status, morphometry, bathymetry, fisheries potential and stress on the ichthyofauna of the lake.
After initial assessment of parameters the lake is in a moderate state of pollution. Local government primary and Middle school children of the village who were engaged by their concerned teachers in a community class were assembled after observing all the SOPs of Covid-19. The children were given extension lecture on the importance of water bodies, pollution and importance of biodiversity.
After the lecture a cleanliness drive was organised along the shore line and within the lake. Two boats of plastic wastes were collected and were properly disposed. Local community was also taken into confidence regarding the collective effort of citizens in making this pristine heritage a free zone from plastic wastes. The heads of divisions thanked forest division for hospitality services and commendable job done by the department In maintaining green shore line around this lake.
The Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K is the only college in country with hill/coldwater fisheries domain and has been producing graduates, post graduates and doctoral students in various disciplines of fisheries.
