Khrunchoo villagers in Pampore protest against Jal Shakti department, demand clean water

PAMPORE: The residents of Khrunchoo village of Pampore in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Wednesday staged a protest against Jal Shakti for providing them contaminated water.
Dozens of locals including women’s and elders protest against Jal Shakti department at Deva Mohalla Khrunchoo area of Pampore.
The residents alleged that they have been fed contaminated water by the Jal Shakti department for the past 15 years due to which they suffer from many water borne diseases.
Talking to Kashmir Reader residents said that a tube well from which they are getting water is having high concentration of iron.
” We appeal to authorities to come to our houses and see with their eyes the contaminated water supplied by the department,” he said.
Another resident, Abdul Khaliq Bhat told Kashmir Reader that they get contaminated water to them but nobody is bothering to purify it.
He said that the residents propose to shift the well near to OHT of Jal Shakti to solve this issue.
A woman of the village told Kashmir Reader that the water they get from taps for drinking is stained with rust and it is stinky.
The Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Sub division Pampore of Jal Shakti department Nawaz Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that the village is supplied water under Deva scheme.
” It is well source based scheme, the iron content at source is high,” he said adding this is stabilized before sending it to OHT
He added that they it checked regularly from Central laboratory “The laboratory tests show high content of Manganese, the iron is in normal range,” he said adding they will check the stink issue
He added that under Jal Jevan Scheme they are going to dig a new well near OHT in near future. There were no bidders for earlier tenders and we will float a new one soon.
