KU’s NSS organises lecture on Surge in Drug Addiction

Srinagar: The National Service Scheme University of Kashmir organised a lecture on “Surge in Drug Addiction: A collective Concern” to mark International day of Drug Addiction and Illicit Trafficking.
Dr Musavir Ahmed, KU’s NSS Coordinator said that the drug addiction problem has assumed epidemic proportions and there is an urgent need to create awareness about this serious issue. All sections of society need to work in harmony against this menace, which, if left unattended, has the potential of consuming generations of youth, he said.
Dr Abdul Majid, Head, Department of Psychiatry SKIMS Medical College, Bemina was the resource person for the programme.
Terming the drug addiction situation in Kashmir as unfortunate, Dr Majid pointed to the fact that the treatment centres in the Valley are ill-equipped to handle the rehabilitation of patients effectively. He also observed that the long-term rehabilitation policy for the victims of drug addiction is conspicuous by its absence in the valley. He urged all the stakeholders to work in a coordinated manner to bring this menace to an end.
Dr Shazia, program officer NSS, presented a vote of thanks.
