Most ATMs ‘dead’

Srinagar: Most of the money vending ATMs in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley remained non-functional for the third consecutive day on Thursday.
Kashmir Reader received calls from different parts of the Valley, with people complaining that most of the ATMs were either ‘dead’ or functioning erratically.
A caller identifying himself as Hamid of Nowhatta here said he visited more than 12 ATMs from Nowhatta to city square Lal Chowk, as he required some cash urgently, but none of them was functional.
“Banks, including ‘our own’ J&K Bank, always make tall claims of having alternative backups for power supply and other necessary paraphernalia, but at crucial times they fail to serve,” the caller said.
Another caller said few ATMs were working in the early afternoon but later they too displayed messages like ‘out of order’.
A major snowfall on Tuesday hit Kashmir Valley resulting in complete power and communication breakdown, which hit the functioning of ATMs as well.
Meanwhile, no senior official from the J&K Bank was available for comment.
