Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan:  Police arrest 4 drug peddlers, destroy illegal cannabis crops, organize awareness rallies

SRINAGAR: In a continued effort to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan, police achieved significant successes across multiple districts on Monday, including the arrest of four drug peddlers, destruction of illegally cultivated cannabis, and organization of awareness programmes and rallies.
In Baramulla, police during a naka checking operation at Babareshi Crossing intercepted a Scooty and recovered 17 grams of Charas-like substance from Shahid Ahmad Lone, a resident of BathiporaNaidkhai, Sumbal. In another operation at Jani Chowk, Khawajabagh, police recovered 487.5 grams of opium pods from Amandeep Singh and Muzain Tanveer, both residents of Khawajabagh, Baramulla.
In Handwara, police apprehended Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Kralgund, during a naka operation at Waskoora Crossing and recovered Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus contraband substance from his possession.
All accused have been arrested, shifted to respective police stations, and cases registered under relevant sections of law.
In Anantnag, acting on credible information, police destroyed illegally cultivated cannabis plants on land belonging to Gulzar Ahmad Mir at Nai Basti, Marhama. The crop was destroyed in the presence of the Executive Magistrate, Numberdar, Chowkidar, and independent witnesses. FIR No. 143/2026 under Section 8/20(a) of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Bijbehara.
In Sopore, a joint team of Police, Excise, and Revenue Departments destroyed wild cannabis spread over an area at village Choora under the jurisdiction of Police Post Putkha. Samples were collected and seized for further analysis.
In Baramulla, police, in collaboration with Government Girls Higher Secondary School AhmadporaGoom, organized an awareness programme and rally to educate youth about the harmful effects of drug abuse. Students and teachers actively participated, carrying anti-drug messages through various areas.
In Sopore, police conducted multi-location enforcement and awareness drives, including inspection of medical shops around Government Degree College and Main Town to verify records and prevent misuse of scheduled drugs. A village-level awareness programme at Seer Jagir witnessed active participation from Lumberdars, Chowkidars, and local residents.
In Awantipora, an awareness programme was conducted at Madrasa Taleem-ul-Islam School, Tral, while a wild cannabis destruction drive was carried out in Panzgam in coordination with Revenue and Excise Departments.
Police reiterated their commitment to eliminating the drug menace through sustained enforcement and community engagement, appealing to the public to share information related to drug trafficking, with informant identities to be kept strictly confidential.
