SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Small Scale Industrial Association (KSSIA) has expressed deep regret over the loss of a prestigious wood-based industrial unit in the Baghi Ali Mardan Khan industrial estate due to a devastating fire.
The renowned facility, owned by Syed Sajad Ahmad Qalander, specialized in the manufacture of high-end furniture and wooden artifacts. Tragically, the unit was completely engulfed in flames during the night of December 28-29, 2024, resulting in the total destruction of the building, along with its raw materials and finished products, the association said in a statement issued here, adding, “The blaze also extensively damaged the plant and machinery. Although the precise monetary losses are still being assessed, they are expected to be substantial.”
KSSIA has expressed heartfelt sympathy and unwavering support to Syed Sajad Qalander and other members of the Ess Que Group during this incredibly challenging time.
The association commended the swift and coordinated efforts of the Fire and Emergency Department, whose prompt action was pivotal in controlling the fire and preventing further damage to nearby units. It praised the timely intervention of the Police Department, led by SHO Lalbazaar Ashfaq Ahmad, for ensuring the safety and security of all individuals present at the scene.
On Sunday, General Manager of SICOP Waseem Dev, accompanied by other officials, visited the fire-ravaged site to express solidarity with the affected unit.
The Advisory Committee of the Federation of Chambers of Industries Kashmir (FCIK), led by Shahid Kamili, along with presidents of various industrial estates and associations, and numerous individuals from across the Kashmir Valley, have also shown strong solidarity and concern following this unfortunate incident. KSSIA urges the Advisory Committee to actively pursue the proposal for an infrastructure audit of industrial estates in the valley, previously discussed with the Chief Minister and other authorities, to enhance firefighting systems and other infrastructural needs.
KSSIA President Syed Fazal Illahi, along with office bearers and members Shabir Ahmad, Haamid Chashoo, Aqib Gulzar, Manzoor Ahmad, and others remained at the site until dawn to oversee the fire extinguishing efforts, the statement added.
