Pride in virtue: Lessons from Quranic verses and Ahadith

Must read

True pride indeed lies in the beauty of one’s attitude and the depth of respect for others, rather than in mere wealth or intellectual attainment. Quranic verses beautifully emphasize this principle:
Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [other] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.”
Surah Al-Isra (17:53):
“And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to humankind, a clear enemy.”
Surah Al-Qalam (68:4):
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
Additionally, the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad SAW support the idea of pride lying in one’s attitude and respect for others rather than in material wealth or intellectual attainment:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The most complete of the believers in faith are those with the best character, and the best of you are the best in behaviour towards their wives.” (Tirmidhi)
Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Richness is not in the abundance of worldly goods but in the contentment of the soul.” (Sahih Muslim)
Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “He will not enter Paradise whose neighbour is not secure from his wrongful conduct.” (Sahih Muslim)
In conclusion, true pride resides in one’s virtuous demeanour and respect for others, as emphasized by Quranic verses and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
