Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my strong OBJECTION to the proposed removal of Holy SUNEHRI MASJID (MOSQUE), Sunehri Bagh Road, New Delhi (Grade-III Heritage Building, listed vide Notification dated 01.10.2009 of GNCTD) near Central Secretariat, New Delhi, as outlined by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).
Holy Sunehri Masjid holds historical and cultural significance, being an old mosque with deep-rooted connections to our heritage. I believe that the removal of such a structure may lead to communal disharmony, potentially impacting the social fabric of the community.
The Sunehri Masjid is not merely a structure of bricks and mortar; it stands as a testament to our historical legacy and architectural grandeur. Its demolition would result in an irrevocable loss to the cultural fabric and collective identity of our city. It would also deprive future generations of the opportunity to learn from and appreciate the tangible history of our ancestors.
I urge you to consider alternative proposals that would address traffic concerns without compromising our heritage. I also propose a community consultation to explore potential solutions that could serve both the city’s infrastructural needs and the preservation of its cultural sites.
Considering the diverse and multicultural nature of our society, it is crucial to safeguard and respect the religious and cultural sites that contribute to the pluralistic identity of our capital. Removing Holy Sunehri Masjid may inadvertently fuel tensions and hinder communal harmony.
I would also like to suggest the establishment of a committee dedicated to thoroughly examining this matter with accountability and diligence.
The committee should comprise individuals with expertise in historical preservation, cultural heritage, and community relations. This diverse group could ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the potential consequences associated with the removal of Holy Sunehri Masjid.
Furthermore, the committee should actively seek input from the local community, religious leaders, and heritage experts to gather diverse perspectives and insights. Public forums, hearings, and consultations could be organized to facilitate an inclusive decision-making process.
While I understand the need for developing sustainable mobility solutions, I strongly believe that such progress should not come at the expense of our heritage. There are numerous examples globally where modern urban planning has successfully integrated with historical preservation, ensuring that development and conservation go hand in hand.
I urge you to reconsider this proposal, taking into account the potential repercussions on communal relations and the sentiments of the people. Preserving our shared history and cultural heritage is paramount for a cohesive and tolerant society.
By forming such a committee, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) can demonstrate a commitment to transparency, public engagement, and the responsible handling of issues impacting the city’s rich cultural fabric.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will consider the objections raised by concerned citizens in making the final decision.
Sincerely,
Dr Nowhera Shaik
