From legacy to revival: Nurturing education and innovation in the Muslim Ummah

Must read

In the annals of history, the Muslim Ummah stood tall as a source of enlightenment and innovation. Its scholars, scientists, and universities disseminated knowledge throughout the world, fostering intellectual growth and prosperity. However, the current state of education in the Muslim Ummah falls far behind its historical achievements.
Many Muslims have shied away from embracing various fields of study, considering them too worldly and irrelevant to their faith. This mindset has contributed to a decline in educational standards and hindered the progress of the Muslim Ummah. To understand the magnitude of this decline, we can turn to the words of Dr. Sir Mohammad Iqbal:
Ganwa Di Hum Ne Jo Aslaf Se Meeras Payi Thi
Surreya Se Zameen Par Asman Ne Hum Ko De Mara
(We have counted the legacy we received from our ancestors; the sky has struck us on earth with a meteor)
This powerful verse illustrates the loss of the Muslim Ummah’s former glory and the tremendous challenges it faces today. The metaphorical impact of the meteor symbolizes the destruction of a once-great civilization, leaving the Muslim Ummah in a state of humiliation and despair.
One of the primary reasons for the decline of the Ummah is the tendency to prioritize tertiary issues over more substantial ones. Instead of focusing on critical matters, Muslims often find themselves engaged in debates over minute details, such as the placement of hands during namaz or the volume of reciting “Ameen.” While these discussions may have value in specific contexts, it is essential to recognize that they should not overshadow the broader goals of education and progress.
The world continues to progress at a rapid pace, while the Muslim Ummah lags behind. To regain its standing, the Ummah must reaffirm its identity and eradicate the sense of despair that lingers. It is crucial to acknowledge that the world, which once benefited from the knowledge of Muslim universities, has now become a place where Islam is frequently misrepresented and attacked. Muslims must be prepared to defend Islam and work courageously to cultivate a revolutionary mindset that embraces education, critical thinking, and scientific advancements.
In conclusion, the Muslim Ummah must recognize the value of education in all fields and strive for progress and prosperity. It is essential to prioritize real issues that contribute to the advancement of society and overcome the challenges at hand. By fostering a culture of curiosity and embracing knowledge the Muslim Ummah can reclaim its position as a global center of intellectual growth, innovation, and positive change.
