Missing girl’s body retrieved from power canal in Kangan

KANGAN: The body of a missing girl was recovered from a power canal in the Ganiwan area of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Saturday after an intensive search operation carried out by police and rescue teams.
Officials said that the girl, a resident of Syed Basti Surfraw Gund, had been missing since May 15, prompting concern among family members and locals. Following the report of her disappearance, Jammu and Kashmir Police Station Gund, along with SDRF Unit Gund, launched a large-scale search operation in the USHP-II Kangan power canal to trace her whereabouts.
The rescue operation, which continued for several days, covered a vast stretch of the canal from Sumbal Bala to Kangan.
After strenuous efforts, the body of the girl was finally retrieved from the canal at Ganiwan on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Soon after the body was recovered, police shifted it for medico-legal formalities and initiated inquest proceedings to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Gund Police have taken cognisance of the matter, and further investigation has been initiated.
