The university has emerged as a hub of innovation, research and sustainable development for future leaders

Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), headquartered at Shalimar near the Mughal garden with multiple campuses spread across the picturesque Kashmir valley, stands as a prominent hub of agricultural innovation and scholarly excellence. The university serves the northwestern Himalayan region. The area’s temperate climate contributes significantly to the university’s conducive learning and research programmes. Established in 1982, SKUAST-K has emerged as one of India’s premier agricultural universities, significantly transforming the agricultural education landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and achieving numerous national Academic/Research milestones.

A distinguished record of achievement:

At the vanguard of scientific progress in agriculture and allied fields, SKUAST-K operates as a multidisciplinary institution comprising seven academic campuses, fourteen Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and eleven research stations. The university is presently ranked among India’s top ten agricultural institutions, reflecting its robust performance in agricultural and allied sector research. SKUAST-K has emerged as a beacon of innovation and sustainability in India’s agricultural sector. With a portfolio of 71 patents and 67 startups at Technology Readiness Levels ranging from 5–8, the university underscores its commitment to fostering entrepreneurship among faculty and students.

Agricultural Innovations Enhancing Regional Livelihoods

SKUAST-K’s contributions have significantly bolstered food security and economic resilience in the region. The development of Shalimar Rice-4 (SR-4), a high-yielding variety producing up to 60 tons per hectare, exemplifies this impact. Efforts to revive traditional rice landraces like Mushkbudji and Zag have not only preserved the area’s rich agrobiodiversity but also led to the introduction of the first aromatic Kashmiri Basmati variety. In horticulture, the university’s promotion of high-density farming techniques has resulted in a sixfold increase in apple production, transforming the industry’s productivity and sustainability.

Pioneering a Bio-Economy in Jammu & Kashmir

SKUAST-K is steering Jammu and Kashmir towards becoming a model bio-economy state. The Holistic Agricultural Development Programme (HADP), with an investment of 5,013 crores, aims to modernise agriculture, ensure livelihood security, and enhance productivity across the region. To facilitate agricultural exports and provide global market access to farmers, the university has introduced the JK EXIM Policy, offering strategic guidelines and support to stakeholders.

Integrating Advanced Technologies in Agriculture

At the forefront of agricultural innovation, SKUAST-K integrates cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), automation, precision agriculture and CRISPR-Cas gene editing into its research ecosystem. The establishment of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML) and the launch of a B.Tech program in AI in Agriculture, in collaboration with IIT Mandi, exemplify the university’s commitment to technological advancement

Additionally, SKUAST-K emphasises sustainable practices through Integrated Pest and Disease Management and Integrated Nutrient Management programs, focusing on soil health and environmental protection.
