‘Strong arithmetic foundation essential for higher learning’

SRINAGAR: In a significant step towards improving foundational learning, the Private Schools Association Jammu & Kashmir (PSAJK) organized an interactive session on Arithmetic Readiness for the first batch of mathematics teachers. The session was led by Mr. Nassir Shah, former Director, Science & Technology, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, who shared practical strategies for strengthening arithmetic teaching and learning in schools.
Addressing the participants, Mr. Shah expressed concern over the declining interest and competency in arithmetic among students. He emphasized that strong arithmetic skills form the foundation of mathematics, scientific thinking, logical reasoning, and everyday problem-solving. He encouraged teachers to adopt innovative, activity-based, and learner-centric approaches to make arithmetic engaging and meaningful for students.
The inaugural session was graced by Dr. Baba Nazrul Islam, President, Private Schools Association Jammu & Kashmir (PSAJK), and Mr. Mubashir Wafaii, Advisor, PSAJK, who appreciated the initiative and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to enhancing the quality of mathematics education across the Union Territory.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Baba Nazrul Islam said that declining arithmetic proficiency has become a matter of serious concern for the entire school fraternity. He stated that unless students develop confidence in basic numerical skills at an early stage, higher learning in mathematics, science, engineering, technology, and commerce becomes increasingly difficult. He stressed that strengthening foundational arithmetic is essential for improving overall academic outcomes and preparing students for future opportunities.
The Association announced that this initiative marks the beginning of a larger movement aimed at revitalizing arithmetic education in Jammu & Kashmir. A series of teacher capacity-building programmes, classroom interventions, and academic support initiatives will be organized in collaboration with experienced educators and subject experts to improve numeracy skills across schools.
PSAJK called upon schools, teachers, parents, and education stakeholders to join this mission of rebuilding mathematical confidence among students. The Association reiterated that investing in foundational arithmetic today is an investment in the scientific, technological, and economic future of Jammu & Kashmir.
