Srinagar-Leh highway reopens after 10 days

SONAMARG: Light motor vehicle movement on the Srinagar-Leh national highway was restored on Sunday afternoon after being closed for 10 days due to fresh snowfall and snow avalanches last week.

Officials said that traffic from Sonamarg towards Kargil has been reinstated. Stranded light motor vehicles (LMVs) were permitted to travel from Sonamarg towards Kargil on Sunday afternoon following clearance from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the Srinagar-Leh highway.

The officials said that the priority is to clear all stranded passenger vehicles on both sides before permitting any fresh traffic movement on the highway. “Depending on favorable weather conditions and road clearance, a decision regarding the movement of heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) will be made soon,” they added.
