Authorities seize two mechanical boats in raid on illegal sand mining in Awantipora

PAMPORE: In a coordinated effort led by the Geology and Mining Department Pulwama, supervised by District Mineral Officer (DMO) Er. Mohammad Manzoor, along with the local police, a raid was conducted on illegal sand mining activities in the River Jhelum on late Saturday evening. The operation resulted in the seizure of two mechanical boats in the Barsoo area of Awantipora, officials informed Kashmir Reader.
As part of an ongoing crackdown against illicit sand mining in the district, a joint team comprising officials from the Geology and Mining Department and the Police conducted nighttime raids in Barsoosa, Awantipora. During the operation, authorities successfully confiscated two mechanical boats used for sand extraction on the River Jhelum in Barsoo, Awantipora. Following the seizure, the boats were removed from the river, demonstrating the department’s determination to curb unlawful mining practices and safeguard the region’s natural resources.
The swift action underscores the relentless efforts of the authorities to enforce regulations and protect the district’s natural resources from exploitation.
DMO Pulwama, Engineer Mohammad Manzoor, stated that the crackdown on illegal mining activities will continue until complete control is established. He emphasized the department’s round-the-clock commitment to addressing the issue, stating that a dedicated team is actively working day and night.
In a recent meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, strict instructions were issued to prevent illegal mining operations. In response, the Geology and Mining Department, Revenue Department, and Police Department have joined forces to tackle the issue effectively.
The two mechanical boats seized in Barsoo, Awantipora, were found to be engaged in unauthorized sand mining along the River Jhelum. Authorities have taken decisive action by removing them from the river, with significant support from the local police.
DMO Manzoor reiterated that individuals involved in illegal mining will face legal consequences. He urged those interested in lawful operations to seek permission from the department, assuring them of necessary support and guidance.
