Srinagar: A training program on ‘Application of DSSAT Crop Simulation Softaware was inaugurated on Monday at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Shalimar campus.
The five-day Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) training is organised by SKUAST-K’s Division of Soil Sciences, Faculty of Horticulture with support from the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India.
The primary objective of the training is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the applications of information technology in crop management systems, emphasizing the role of DSSAT software. This 5-day training program on the applications of DSSAT Simulation Software will bring together experts, scholars, and aspiring agricultural enthusiasts to enhance their knowledge and skills in the ever-evolving field of agriculture.
The training sessions is being conducted at the newly established state-of-the-art Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics Lab, Shalimar campus, where Principal Scientist Dakshina Murthy Kadiyala, an expert in Agronomy and Crop Growth Modelling, will provide hands-on training in the use of DSSAT software. The program is aimed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to harness the capabilities of DSSAT Software for efficient crop management and sustainable agriculture.
Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, who was the chief guest, at the inaugural function, highlighted the significance of digital agriculture and stressed the pivotal role of data science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning in modern-day agriculture. He also emphasized the importance of developing a diverse skill set in addition to academic knowledge.
Co-PI NAHEP and OSD to VC, Prof Azmat Alam Khan, highlighted the importance of the training program and the commitment of the university to improving the skills among the students to make them ready for next-gen human resource power. Dr Javaid Ahmad Wani, Head of the Division of Soil Science, emphasized how the application of technology serves as a beacon of hope in addressing natural adversities in agriculture. Dr Shabir Ahmad Bangroo, the Organizing Secretary of the program, discussed the prospects of training for sustainable agriculture and emphasized the indispensable role of technology in agriculture management systems. He highlighted the importance of information technology in addressing pressing challenges faced by modern agriculture, such as crop monitoring, yield prediction, and soil health assessment. Shahid Shuja Shafai moderated the program, and Dr Shayista Nazir concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
