DC Pulwama drives conservation efforts at Chatlam Wetland in Pampore

Pampore: Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom, led a delegation to the renowned Chatlam Wetland in Pampore and the Indian International Kashmir Trade Centre (IIKSTC) Dusoo Pampore area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The visit aimed at emphasizing the significance of preserving the wetland’s avian inhabitants and enhancing its natural beauty.
Accompanied by key officials including Additional Deputy Commissioner Awantipora Zaffar Husson Shawl Shal, Tehsildar Pampore Zuber Ahmad Bhat, and Wildlife Officer Sajid Farooq, Dr. Qayoom interacted with local representatives of the Lalpora Chatlam. During the discussions, community members presented their demands for further beautifying the wetland. Dr. Qayoom assured them of concerted efforts to enhance the wetland’s aesthetics and confirmed plans to initiate ecotourism in the region.
Spread across hundreds of kanals of land, the Chatlam wetland attracts a variety of migratory birds including Mallard, Gadwall, Common Teal, Northern Shoveller, Pintail, and Grey Leg Geese. These birds migrate from Siberia, China, Mongolia, and Central Asia, seeking refuge in the wetland during freezing temperatures in their native regions.
Speaking about the importance of the Chatlam wetland, Dr. Basharat Qayoom highlighted its significance as a crucial habitat for migratory birds. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to maintain the wetland’s cleanliness and assured active involvement of local communities and relevant departments in conservation initiatives. The wetland has been entrusted to the wildlife department, and plans are underway for ecotourism and wildlife conservation.
The comprehensive assessment conducted during the visit involved various stakeholders and focused on ensuring the wetland’s cleanliness and suitability for future migratory bird arrivals. The initiative underscores the community’s dedication to preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Chatlam Wetland.
