7-day workshop on fishing technologies begins at SKUAST-K

Srinagar: SKUAST-K’s Division of Fishery Engineering, Faculty of Fisheries started seven-day training programme entitled “Fishing Technologies for Sustainable Fisheries”. The inaugural session of the programme was held on Thursday, August 03 and is being sponsored by NAHEP, SKUAST-K.
The programme started with a brief overview of the workshop by Dr. Shabir A. Dar, Course Coordinator. Prof. (Dr.) Gohar Bilal Wani, Head, Division of Fishery Engineering (Course Director) gave the welcome address. He welcomed all the participants, offline and online, as the programmes is being attended by renowned national and international Scientists, scholars, students and entrepreneurs. Prof. (Dr.) A. M. Najar, Former Head, Division of FRM, FoFy during his speech stressed on the need for the development of technologies for prized local fish funa of Kashmir. Dr. Parveen Putra, Former ADG, ICAR during his speech gave the overlook of present scenario of fishing technologies being used in India and abroad and the impact of various gears on fish catch. He congratulated Faculty of Fisheries for conducting the workshop on this important topic.
Prof. (Dr.) Farooz Ahmad Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Fisheries in his address discussed about the present fish production from the capture sector of the country which comprises almost 50% of the total production despite exponential increase in culture sector and the impact of illegal, unregulated and uncontrolled destructive fishing gears on the sustainable fish production from the capture sector. He stressed for the need of use of modern Fishing technologies based on AI, Machine learning, robotics, sensor/radar based, etc. so that the resources are being exploited in a sustainable manner.
The invited speaker Dr. Krishna R. Salin, Chair Aquaculture, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand in his speech stressed upon the dual degree programme and showed his willingness and every possible support for the interested students of Fisheries who want to study at AIT and possible collaborative work with Faculty of Fisheries. Dr. Ashfauq Farooq Agha, Co-coordinator of the programme presented vote of thanks at the end.
