KVK-Leh interacts with farmers on “Food and Nutrition”

The country since independence has made huge progress in food grains production. The food grains production has increased six times from 50 MT in 1950’s to more than 300 MT at present, but nutritional security is still an issue. Hunger and Malnutrition are still prevalent in the country even after 75 years of independence. Every 4 out of 10 children in the country suffer from stunting and wasting. Vice-chancellor called for a 5A approach to tackle the problem of hunger and malnutrition. He exhorted upon the scientists to work on Awareness, Availability,
Accessibility, Affordability and Assimilation. Prof. Sharma also called for doubling farmers’ income by promoting sustainable agriculture practices based on use of local resources, motivating farmers for diversification, creating appropriate marketing opportunities for the producers and to focus on value addition and food processing to avoid food losses and wastage.
Dr. F. D. Sheikh Programme Coordinator, KVK-Leh spoke of the various interventions made by KVK-Leh in ensuring nutritional security of the farming community in the region. HVC appreciated KVK-Leh for all its endeavour towards the socio-economic upliftment of the farming community of the region.
