Offers hope to women suffering from complex gynae cancers, says Dr Swapna Misra
LEH: The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, headed by its Director Dr Swapna Misra, who is also a Robotic Laparoscopic and Cancer Surgeon, has treated several women suffering from complex gynae problems through the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi. Dr Misra has more than 1,300 robotic surgeries to her credit.
Dr Misra has also successfully treated more than 100 women patients via Daycare Gynae Robotic Surgery, which ensures that the patient is operated and discharged on the same day. There was not a single case from conversion to open in all the Daycare Gynae Robotic Surgeries.
In the first case, a 35-year-old woman had been experiencing chronic pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding and pain during urination. Her ultrasound showed seven fibroids of various sizes in her uterus. The Patient was advised open surgery for removal of the fibroids at another facility, with the risk of loosening of the uterus due to bleeding complications.
The Patient then met Dr Misra at Fortis Mohali who suggested robot-aided surgery as the ideal line of treatment. She subsequently underwent the Daycare Gynae Robotic Surgery wherein all her fibroids were removed and no blood transfusion was required. The Patient went home walking 10 hours after the surgery. She resumed her normal routine after a day.
In another case, a 60-year-old woman was diagnosed with cancer of the endometrium. She had been advised open surgery at various facilities for the uterine cancer. However, the Patient met Dr Misra at Fortis Mohali who operated on her and removed the uterus, tubes, ovaries and lymph nodes through robot-aided surgery.
The Patient was stable after the surgery and walked back home 10 hours after the operation.
Dr Misra, who has conducted more than 1,300 robotic surgeries, said, “Robotic surgery is safe and allows the patient to walk back home on the same day. There is no blood transfusion, antibiotic use and hospitalization. The Daycare Gynae Robotic Surgery not only reduces trauma for the patient, but even the cost of stay at the hospital.”
On the benefits of Robotic Surgery, Dr Misra, said, “Robotic Surgery is the latest form of minimal invasive surgery, which provides a 3D view of the operative field via a special camera inserted into the body of the patient. Parts of the body which are difficult to reach with the human hand can be accessed through robot-assisted arms that can rotate 360 degrees.”
Dr Misra further said, “Robotic Surgery has been established as the gold standard procedure for almost all gynaecological surgeries — fibroids, endometriosis, vesico-vaginal fistula, ovarian cyst, salpingo-oophorectomy, myomectomy, hysterectomy and all cancers of the uterus, ovary and cervix. Robotic-aided surgery has revolutionized the treatment of various gynaecological diseases.”
