Dead dog found in water supply tank that villagers were drinking from

Shopian: In a bizarre and shocking incident, a semi-decomposed body of a dog was removed from a water supply tank at Tachloo village in Shopian district.
The dead dog was found in the tank on Tuesday morning and was soon removed from it by a Jal Shakti department employee with the help of locals.
This tank, according to officials, provides water supply for two big villages, Tachloo and Kumdalan.
Locals from the area said that they have no idea since how long the dog was in the tank and they were consuming the contaminated water for drinking purposes.
A local resident called it extreme callousness on the part of the Jal Shakti department which allowed the dog to get into the tank and die there.
“We are shocked and nobody has eaten anything after we heard a dead dog was recovered from our water tank,” Rayees Ahmad, a local, said.
Executive Engineer for the Jal Shakti department in Shopian, Irfan ul Islam, told Kashmir Reader that action has been taken against the employee who was guarding the tank.
“Actually, some Gujjar families have installed makeshift tents besides our tank and they have broken the fence to fetch the water. Otherwise, our tank is fully fenced,” he said.
Islam said that after the incident, the tank was emptied and fully sanitised. “We will resume fresh water supply from tomorrow and we have also told villagers to remove the non-local family that is staying in the tank premises, since it is the locals who have hired them for manual work,” he said.
