Pampore residents demand repair of defunct street lights

Pampore: The local residents of Saffron Town Pampore in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district alleged that many streets in the town have become defunct causing inconvenience to commuters.
A delegation of elderly residents of the Saffron town told Kashmir Reader that more than 100 street lights were installed in Pampore a year ago by concerned Municipal Committee. They said a number of the street lights in Namblabal, Drangbal, Frestabal and Kadlabal areas have become defunct.
“Walking through dark lanes and by lanes in the evening hours is becoming a daunting task for us,” Abdul Rehman, a local resident said.
The locals told Kashmir Reader that street lights which were installed along Sub district Hospital road in Pampore some years too have become defunct.
The residents told Kashmir Reader that they went to concerned authorities a number of times for removing them with new one ones but nothing was done.
“Two years ago a Municipal Committee Pampore line man Shabir Ahmad for Pampore town was electrocuted to death while repairing an electric supply line and since then the Municipal Committee Pampore has not deputed other line man in his place,” the residents said.
They requested concerned authorities for deputing a line man for the area so that the street lights can be repaired by him.
Municipal Committee Pampore President, Malik Mohammad Yaqoob, told Kashmir Reader that he had a meeting with Principal Secretary Urban Local bodies Jammu and Kashmir government for granting approval for engagement of a line man.
“The principal secretary directed Director Urban local bodies to take up the matter on priority,” he said.
