Wildlife officials capture leopard from a building in Balhama area

PAMPORE: Wildlife department Pampore officials on Saturday captured a young leopard in an under construction building of Yateem Trust at Balhama area of Srinagar outskirts, officials said.
A one and half-year-old leopard was caught alive by a team of wildlife officials of Pampore in Balhama area, wildlife officer told Kashmir Reader.
Wildlife Range officer Pampore Sajjid Farooq told Kashmir Reader that a young leopard captured in building of Rahabar Yateem Trust near Aasatan at Balhama village after local residents complained that a leopard was roaming freely in the residential areas, posing danger to their lives and livestock.
The leopard fell in the trap and was subsequently shifted to nearby forest.
Wildlife Range officer Sajjid Farooq told Kashmir Reader that after receiving information about the presence of leopard the mobilised their team along with matchernary and rushed to the spot.
“Our men showed exemplary courage and entered into the building where the leopard had taken shelter and captured the animal using the net,” Range officer said.
He said that they usually tranquise the animals in such situations but this time some courageous officials decided to capture the leopard without tranquilising it.
“It was a young leopard, around 16 months ol,” he added.
After the recent heavy snowfall, wild animals, especially leopards have entered human habitations, triggering fear among them.
