Two lakh migrant birds land in Kashmir wetlands

Baramulla: Migrant birds that visit Kashmir valley every winter have started their arrival in the past few days. Wildlife officials say that about two lakh migrant birds including Greylag Geese, Common teals, Mallards, Crested Pochards, Gadwalls and Coots have landed in the wetlands of Kashmir.
The wetlands where the birds are landing include Hokersar, which is about 13 sq km, Narkara (3.25 sq km), Manibugh (4.5 sq km), Chatlam (0.25 sq km), Mirgund (4.0 sq km), Ajas (1.0 sq km), Shallabugh (16.0 sq km), and Hygam (4.50 sq km).
Some birds are also going to the Wular lake, Dal lake, Manasbal lake and other small water bodies.
Wildlife Warden, Wetlands, Ifshan Dewan told Kashmir Reader that two lakh birds of different species are estimated to have landed in different wetlands while more birds will reach soon.
“We have not yet counted how many have reached our water bodies but about 30 thousand birds landed in Hygam and a good number of birds also landed in Hokersar and in other water bodies. We expect a good number of birds this year as there is good weather this year,” Dewan said.
She said the wetlands department is ready to provide all kinds of food and security at all destinations for these migrant birds, and that teams of wetlands department are visiting these spots to monitor the situation.
Wetlands department employees are spending night and day patrolling the wetlands to prevent the illegal killing of these birds, Dewan said.
