Shopian roads in poor condition, people blame roadside car washing

SHOPIAN: Roads in Shopian are in poor condition with people alleging authorities of using low grade building material and “rampant roadside car washing further deteriorating surface”.
In many areas of Shopian like Circuit House, Mughal road, Sofanaman and Shirmal, car washing on roadside is rampant – which according to officials not only damages the roads but also leads to traffic jams and inconvenience to public.
Sayar Ahmad, a local said that it is fact that roads in Shopian are deplorable, but people must stop damaging them.
He said that people must stop washing their cars on roads.
The authorities have put hoardings and signs against car washing on roads, but it has little impact on people who continue to wash vehicles on roads. The vehicle washing also leads to pollution to canal and other water bodies, said locals.
An official from Roads and Buildings department told Kashmir Reader that snow and rains heavily affect black coating on roads and washing of vehicles adds fuel to fire.
Executive engineer Roads and Buildings department Shopian, Abdul Quyoom Kirmani admitted that such practices are on rampant in district.
“There should be a circular and order from Deputy Commissioner’s office to penalise such people. Despite many awareness attempts, people don’t restrict from such activities,” he said.
