Srinagar-Jammu highway shuts for second day

Body of driver retrieved from Chenab

SRINAGAR: The Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for second straight day on Friday as rains and snow lashed Kashmir.
The highway was closed a day ago after minor landslides and shooting stones occurred at several places along the mountainous road.
An official from Traffic Police control room in Ramban said that vehicular traffic continues to remain suspended as there was no let up in rains.
“Shooting stones continue to occur at several places in Ramban include Digdol, Cafeteria Morh and Panthal,” he said.
According to him, body of a driver whose vehicle rolled down the gorge into Chenab river last evening was retrieved by rescue workers on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Muzaffar Ahmad, 40, of Nai Basti in Anantnag.
The traffic police official said that searches have not been terminated as unconfirmed reports suggest 5-6 people were travelling in the cab.
Meanwhile, the metrological centre Srinagar has predicted more rains and snowfall in upper reaches for today.
On Friday, upper reaches in Kashmir received a fresh bout of snow while rains lashed the plains. The ski-resort Gulmarg, where a major sport event is underway, was blanketed with a fresh layer of snow.
