Pampore locals demand action against illegally dumping of waste along Jhelum banks

PAMPORE: The Municipal Committee Pampore has vowed to act tough against some unscrupulous elements who throw garbage along Jhelum banks in the area.
Local residents from Frestabal and Drangbal areas of Pampore told Kashmir Reader that some unknown persons have been dumping garbage on Jhelum banks for past couple of days.
Bashir Ahmad Bhat, President Fallah Behbood Committee Frestabal area told Kashmir Reader that around three to four truckloads of garbage were thrown on the river banks in their locality by some unknown persons in the dead of the night.
He said that dumping of garbage along the river banks pose a threat to the water body.
“The garage becomes a nuisance for nearby habitation as it causes stink and serves as a breeding ground for various infections,” he said.
He said that they informed Municipal Committee Pampore about the matter and urged them to identify these culprits so that a legal action is taken against them.
Executive officer Municipal Committee Pampore Shakeel Ahmad Shah told Kashmir Reader that dumping garbage on the banks of Jhelum is violation of High Court directions which prohibit this malpractice.
He told that they carried out a drive for 15 days to keep Jhelum banks neat and clean.
“We have taken a cognizance of the matter. An FIR will be lodged in police station so that the matter is thoroughly investigated and the culprits are unmasked,” he said
He further added that a team was sent to the spot and the garbage lifted for its proper disposal at a dumping site.
