Panchayat, MC members slam move to reserve Uri constituency for ST community

Say will resign if implemented

BARAMULLA: The panchayat and municipal members from Uri have slammed the proposed move by government to declare Uri a reserved constituency for Schedule Tribe (ST) community, saying that they will resign from their posts if this is approved by the authorities.
The move, according to members, “will have far reaching consequences in the whole electoral process in the area” and said only 16 percent of the constituency is having ST population.
Bharat Kumar, chairman of the Municipal Committee Uri told Kashmir Reader that if the government is intending any such move, then it must declare the whole residents of the constituency as Schedule Tribe.
“We want equitable growth, and declaring the constituency as reserved for a particular community will be grave injustice for the area that has 84 percent Other Backward Classes (OBC) population,” he said.
He added that they will fight any such move with all panchayat members intending to resign if such move gets a government nod.
Bharat said there 443 OBC panchayat members in Uri Constituency and 57 ST panchayat members.
“We are also sending a memorandum to the LG to apprise him that any such move will have far reaching consquences,” he said.
