Dearth of residential facility at KU affects research work

Srinagar: Acute shortage of residential facility for Kashmir University’s scholars is drastically affecting their research work.
Currently, the varsity’s lone boarding facility ‘Gani Kashmir Research Scholar Inn’ accommodates only 58 male scholars excluding dozens from availing the facility. Since last year, several scholars are in queue waiting for the accommodation in absence of which they have to travel to and from their places.
They have to either go to their homes or have to hire rented accommodations in the neighbourhood of the university. This burns a hole in their pockets as they have to shell out at least Rs 3000-6000 per month on accommodation as well as food.
This, teachers and officials acknowledge, drastically shrink working hours for researchers, hampering conducive atmosphere for research work.
“The researchers will be able to devote most of their time to their research. There would be lot of academic life at the university beyond office hours as well,” an official added.
According to him, the varsity had moved a proposal for constructing residential accommodation for scholars but there is a dearth of funds.
The hostel facility, according to him, is under-construction at Zakura campus.
