Jammu: Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat on Saturday said that situation in the Kashmir valley is improving and the Army is performing its task.

 “Security situation in Kashmir valley is improving. What is happening, just shows the frustration of militants,” General Rawat said while speaking at a function at Sunjwan Military Station in Jammu.

The army head, who was speaking to the troopers, said Jammu and Kashmir government, police and administration were concerned and trying to ensure that people are weaned away.

Rawat stated that the surgical strikes are a way to deal with the terror training camps across the border.

When asked about the training camps, which are still operational across the borders, Rawat said, “I do not know as to who told you that training camps across the border have been closed. Training camps existed there earlier also and they are operational at present too.”

General Rawat further stressed the need for surgical strikes as a way to deal with the training camps. There are other ways also and action is being taken in the matter, he added. On the possibility of a Doklam-like situation along the India-China border, Rawat said, “We have to remain alert.”

On the question of resuming dialogue with Pakistan, the Army chief said, “The military has a task and we will continue to perform that task. The decision on any talks has to be decided politically.”

Regarding the NIA raids and the subsequent arrest of separatist leaders in Kashmir and elsewhere, Gen Rawat said, “In Kashmir, we are following the government’s approach. The NIA raids are part of it. Whatever success is achieved, will emerge in future.”

Chief of Army staff was speaking at Sunjwan Military Station where he on behalf of the honourable President of India, Ram Nath Kovind presented the Presidents’ Standard to 47 Armoured Regiment.  General Rawat also released a ‘Special First Day Cover’ to commemorate the event.
