The district administration Srinagar on Friday imposed restrictions in various parts falling under the jurisdiction of eight Police stations to thwart a Muharram procession here.

The Shiite mourners were scheduled to carry out a Muharram procession from Guru Bazar here which would end at Dalgate area.

Authorities imposed restrictions under section 144 CrPC in Srinagar parts falling under the jurisdiction of eight Police Stations including Shaheedgunj, Karan Nagar, Maisuma, Kothibagh, Shergadhi, Kralkhud, Batmaloo and RM Bagh.

Witnesses said that Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in large number in the restriction bound areas. The forces had erected concertina wires to thwart the vehicular and the pedestrian movement in the areas, they added.

The administration has disallowed the procession since 1990.
