SMC failure turns Marathon-2017 venue into dumping site

As the state Police held Marathon-2017 ‘Run for Peace’ on Sunday, the failures of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) turned the whole venue into a ‘dumping site’, as it failed to make even a single dustbin available for the waste material.

The officials of SMC were in deep slumber prior to the event that was held at Police Golf Course here. The authorities could have taken some measures regarding the event as the venue resembled more of a dumping site, an eyewitness said.

The carelessness of the officials gave bad impressions to the people especially guests, tourists and the locals who visited the venue for the Marathon-2017.

The locals accused the officials of ignoring the requirements of a clean city and demanded necessary action against the erring officials.

“What else can we expect from the corporation which failed to repair the defunct drainage system as well as the street lights in Srinagar areas? Most of the drains and street lights are defunct while the authorities don’t even bother to repair them thereby leaving the hundreds of locals to suffer,” they said.

Locals who were present at Marathon-2017 said that heaps of garbage were lying here as no dustbin was made available for the wastage here.

“I believe that the senior administrative officials don’t even question the SMC authorities for their failures,” Umer Ahmad, one among the locals said.

He said that the failures of SMC in every aspect seem that the corporation is defunct despite the strength of hundreds of employees.

“One fails to understand that why the senior administrative officials act as mute spectator over the failures of SMC. They (senior officials) don’t even utter a single word over the corporation failures,” he added.

Another local present on the occasion said that the SMC is only claiming to have vacated the street vendors from the commercial Hub Lal Chowk but the vendors continue to occupy roads, which result in the massive gridlock eventually. “There statements are contrary to the facts on ground,” he said.
