Militants ‘ransack’ houses of policemen in South Kashmir

Hours after government forces ransacked a house of a Hizbul militant in Kulgam area of South Kashmir, suspected militants barged into houses of several  policemen residing in Kulgam and Anantnag district and damaged windowpanes of their houses.

Reports said that unidentified gunmen, believed to be militants of Hizbul Mujahideen  ransacked the houses of several police officials including a senior officer and an Inspector.

Sources that a group of gunmen barged into the residence of Dawood Ayub, SP Headquarters Srinagar, at Khudwani in Kulgam district and harassed his family members.

According to reports from Kulgam, the gunmen ransacked the SP’s house. Dawood Ayub was in Srinagar while the incident occurred at his home. Khudwani, village acording to reports has emerged as one of the strong base for the Hizbul militants with the gunmen enjoying tremendous support from the residents.

Notably, this is the fourth attack on the house of the senior cop. Earlier, miliatnts entered his house thrice and ransacked the house and threatened the inmates as well.

In the same neighbourhood at Arwani, unidentified gunmen barged into the house of Inspector Illyas and caused harassment to his family members. Reports said that his house was also ransacked. Officials said that Inspector was not present at his home when the gunmen came looking for him.

At Buchru in Kulgam, a group of gunmen appeared at the residence of a counter-insurgent, identified as Hilal Ikhwani, and ransacked his house. Ikhwani, was reportedly at his official residence at Khannabal, Anantnag.

Militants reportedly barged into the house of two policemen in Mirhama Bijbehara and ransacked their houses as well.

Sources added that the house of a CRPF constable posted with the 182 Battalion was raided by militants. However, the constable (name withheld) was not present at his home. Militants also barged into the houses of 3 SPO’s in Trichal village forcing an SPO to announce his resignation before people at Jamia Masjid of the village.

Reports from Tral town of Pulwama district said that unknown persons pelted stones on the house of a Head Constable at Arigam. The cop is posted at police station Qazigund. Reports said that due to stone-hurling some window panes of the house were damaged. The unknown persons also set a fire cracker in air outside the house.

Pertinently, on March 29, militants ransacked a senior police officer’s house in Kulgam district.

On March 28, Militants barged into the residence of an Assistant Sub-Inspector of police and a Constable in Dairoo Village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district and ransacked their houses.

The militants fired gunshots in air before fleeing from the spot.

On March 26, militants in Budgam district abducted Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bhat’s two sons, who were later released.

Bhat’s vehicle was also set ablaze by the militants, who threatened his kin and later fled in a car after firing few rounds.

Suspected militants forced their way into the house of Sub-Inspector Muhammad Subhan Bhat in Chadoora area on the same day and ransacked it.

Importantly, Director General of Police S P Vaid had given a stern warning to the militants and had asked them to leave the families of cops out of the conflict.

“This is between police and militants and families should not be brought into this conflict,” Vaid said.
