As per eye witness accounts police stopped the students from taking out a procession that led to clashes. Students were protesting against the alleged beating of students at Pulwama degree college a few days back.

Police resorted to use of heavy tear smoke shells to disperse protesters. As per reports at least 50 students received injuries in the clashes that erupted at different educational institutions. Station House Officer Maisuma Rashid Ahmed Malik was among the policemen who too were injured. Situation remained tense in Lal Chowk after the clashes and heavy deployment of police and paramilitary force personnel were made to quell the protests.
